Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen is professor at the Department for Cross-cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen. He specializes in Arab mass media and modernization of the Islamic world in the 19th and 20 century, particularly within political ideologies, legal thinking and teaching.

Jakob is heading The New Islamic Public Sphere Programme, at the University of Copenhagen. The programme aims to map and analyse how new media such as satellite TV and the Internet are changing Islamic norms, politics and identity in the contemporary Middle East.

Jakob is the former director for the Danish Egyption Dialogue Instiute in Cairo and is an active participant in the academic and public debate on the Middle East and the Islamic world and is serving as an expert commentator on Middle East matters. Also he is the general editor at the publishing house Vandkunsten that specializes in Islamic culture, religion and social conditions.
