Christian Igel studied Computer Science at the Technical University of Dortmund, Germany. In 2002, he received his Doctoral degree from the Faculty of Technology, Bielefeld University, Germany, and in 2010 his Habilitation degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Sciences, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. From 2002 to 2010, he was a Junior-professor for Optimization of Adaptive Systems at the Institut für Neuroinformatik, Ruhr-University Bochum. In October 2010, he was appointed professor with special duties in machine learning at DIKU. Since December 2014, he is a full professor at DIKU. He has been appointed constituent head of the new SCIENCE AI Center at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen.

Among others, Christian served as a NIPS (Advances in Neural Information Processing) Area Chair and is an Associate Editor of the Artificial Intelligence Journal (AIJ), Associate Editor of the Evolutionary Computation Journal (ECJ), and Editor of the German Journal on Artificial Intelligence (KI).

Christian’s main research area is Machine Learning. Currently, he is particularly interested in the theory, efficient implementation, and application of:

  • Support vector machines and other kernel-based methods,
  • Evolution strategies for reinforcement learning and multi-objective optimization,
  • Deep learning.
